Only a few months ago, results of a study about vitamins was published, saying that these substances offer only a few benefits. Researchers also found that people who are taking this supplement are in a higher risk of death and illnesses such as prostate cancer. This information came from the National Cancer Institute. These publications made people wonder whether or not taking diet supplements daily will promote good health.

While some experts say that vitamins do not help much somebody's health, a greater number of health authorities support the fact that substances like these should be taken on a daily basis by some people, especially those that have deficiencies. The human body needs multivitamins and minerals to be able to properly function. It also needs protection from a host of diseases and illnesses, including heart disorders, and cervical, prostate and colon cancers.

If you include the right kind and a wide variety of food in your diet, that is good news. Because you get what substances your body needs from these foods. However, your body may not get all the vitamins required to keep you healthy. So, as an insurance, you should take multivitamins every day. We will all come to some stages in our lives when vitamins will become very important. For example, a pregnant woman needs to take multivitamins, in addition to folic acid, to provide proper nutrition for her baby. This should start during the first trimester of her pregnancy.

They can prevent and treat various illnesses, and function like no other nutrients in regulating heart problems, eye and skin disorders, and high cholesterol levels. For example, Vitamin A (Retinol) helps in healing of wounds, acne, infections of the eye and skins. Vitamin B1 (Thiamine) prevents beriberi, indigestion, heart diseases, facilitates blood circulation, body metabolism and brain development. Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) prevents scurvy, common cold, some cancers, infections, high blood cholesterol, high blood pressure, kidney disorders, inflammations, and many others.

Vitamin D prevents rickets; Vitamin E (Tocopherol) slows down the ageing process, prevents heart diseases, sterility, helps during menopause period, and helps in functioning of the brain. Vitamin K can prevent blood clotting, internal bleeding, osteoporosis, and heavy menstrual flow. Vitamins can prevent and treat almost every type of illness. They can be taken at any time of the day or night, however, some experts say that it would be more beneficial if you take them at the same time each day. It is important that you make it a part of your routine, so you will less likely to forget to take it.

Finally, these important substances can be obtained by eating fresh vegetables and fruits, fish, lean meats, low-fat dairy, whole grains, poultry, etc. These foods are the best ways of providing your body with a dose of multivitamins and nutrients. However, you should also have a backup in the form of supplements, so that gaps in your diet can be easily filled in.
